Intracytoplasmic sperm injection (ICSI) has dramatically increased pregnancy rates in couples suffering from severe male factor, infertility (low sperm counts) and in some cases of infertility of unknown cause(s). ICSI patients undergo the standard in vitro fertilization procedure with the exception that after the eggs are retrieved, the sperm is injected directly into the egg.
Cryopreservation is a procedure for freezing and storing embryos at a low temperature. Although scientists have been successfully freezing sperm for decades, they have not been as successful with unfertilized eggs; thus far, only fertilized eggs (embryos) are routinely frozen and thawed.
Some women are unable to conceive because they cannot produce healthy eggs. The Egg Donor Program at CEMEF can help these women, as well as those with: unsuccessful super ovulation therapies; early onset of natural menopause or surgically induced menopause; premature ovarian failure; abnormal eggs and repetitive failures with In Vitro Fertilization; and for those women who carry genetic abnormalities or genetically transmitted diseases.
This treatment was first utilized by Dr. Beer in women with recurrent pregnancy losses. He has recently applied LIT for many couples with idiophatic infertility and IVF and ET failures.
